Opening Ceremony Message from Dr. Nebiolo

On the occasion of the 18th Universiade 1995 opening ceremony in Fukuoka, Japan,we are bonored to have in attendance Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince of Japan. I would like to thank the International Olympic Committee, the International Sports Federations, the National University Sports Federations, the Japanese University for Sports Board and the Organizing Committee for the Fukuoka University for their invaluable support. Furthermore, I am grateful to Fukuoka Prefecture, Fukuoka City, Kasuga City and Munakata City governments. Without their cooperation, the Games would not have been possible. Finally, I would like extend my warm wishes to the people of Fukuoka for their enthusiastic welcome on this splendid day. Fukuoka, being a historical gateway for international exchanges, is a fitting site for this international gathering of young people. The Universiade Games is a wonderful opportunity for world-class athletes to meet and compete, forming lasting friendships with their peers from around the world. I sincerely believe that this gathering of youth will contribute to peace and friendship among all countries and regions. The Fukuoka Games are largest ever in Universiade history. Much time and effort has gone into the planning and execution of these 12 day;I am sure you will not be disappointed. This opening ceremony commemorates not only the start of the 1995 Games but also symbolizes a fresh start for future generations, represented here today by so many of the world's youth. Again, I send my warmest wishes to all athletes, officials and spectators on this momentous occasion.
